Queenstown to Wanaka

Sunny start

View Jans Australasia on JanSpencer's travel map.

Left Queenstown around 9.30am or drive to Wanaka. Stopped at Cordona. The old school house, now a cafe and bar. Had breakfast here. Very nice. Lots of photo opportunities.

Arrived at Wanaka too early for check in, so went into the town to look around. Lovely atmosphere.

Back to Edgewater apartments to check in. Beautiful views from our lodge of the pond and lake beyond. Again, we wish we had longer here.

Queenstown

Sunday

Breakfast at the hotel. Can you believe it they ran out of baked beans and replaced them with spaghetti! I was looking forward to baked beans and egg. The Millennium is such a large hotel. Shame on them.

Drove to Arrowtown, looked around the Chinese Goldmine Village. Lots of history here.

On the way back we drove to Coronet Peak. Fabulous views.

Back via Queenstown and onto Glenorchy. Worth the drive for the views. Not much else at Glenorchy. It was very bright and sunny but beginning to get really cold. Back to Queenstown for soup!

Went up the mountain on the Skyline again but decided not to do the stargazing even if it was clear as it was bitterly cold.

Queenstown

Saturday

Walked to town (around 15-20mins) for breakfast. Lots of places to choose from. Lovely sunny morning. Ate outside. Walked to Skyline booking desk to upgrade our Stratosphere dining to a window seat. Costs extra but worth it.

Went to wildlife park. Was okay. A lot of hard work by dedicated volunteers. Wanted to see the kiwis being fed but there were too many rude people standing to spoil the view of others and not listening to instructions. Your tickets are valid for extra days, if you can spare the time.

Back to the town. It was a lovely ambience. Market stalls, live music and lovely and sunny. Perfect. Walked along the lakefront and into the park. Lots to see and do in Queenstown. We are glad we had 3 nights. It seems like a really good break.

Evening - Gondola ride up the mountain for Skyline meal. Buffet. Really lovely choice of food. Plenty for everyone and we had a corner window seat, so views both sides. Perfect. Fabulous views.

Unfortunately it clouded over and the star gazing didn’t happen. We were offered to come back the next evening. We will see.

Milford Sound

From Te Anau

Packed up, early breakfast and checked out. Left our car at the hotel. We had arranged a coach trip to Milford Sound which was all day. It would have been better if we had had another night at our hotel because we had to drive 2 hrs to Queenstown after the trip.

Coach (Real Journeys) collected us at 10.20am from Te Anau and took us to Milford Sound. We stopped at Mirror Lakes. It’s all so beautiful and picturesque. It was sunny and bright. Hopeful it would stay nice while we were on the Sound.

Got on our boat the Milford Wanderer. There are 2 identical boats plus other companies boats. Went up on top where there was a very brisk cold wind. On with coats hats etc. Ate our packed lunch, which was provided. Not bad at all.

Beautiful scenery and waterfalls. Really breathtaking. We saw seals basking on rocks and one tiny penguin, who soon disappeared as we got close.

It was a fabulous trip - the only drawback being the drive to get there and back. When we got on the coach to start with, there were people already on there from Queenstown. The seats were tilted towards the window. They were also very tightly packed in with people reclining their seats. It made it very uncomfortable for anyone with long legs. I would not do this trip from Queenstown, it’s far too long. Some people chose to go by coach and fly back from Milford Sound. More sensible it at a cost.

Back just before 6pm. Drove ourselves to Queenstown. Arrived around 8pm.

Te Anau

From Dunedin

Left just before 10am to drive to Te Anau. The weather was definitely cooler but still bright. Stopped for a warm drink and breakfast toastie at Captains Cafe & Bar in Balclutha where it started to rain. Rained on and off all the way. Low cloud over the mountains. Arrived it was dull but not cold. Booked in - very nice room Distinction Hotel. Changed into waterproofs and went for a walk in by now light rain. Shared a ‘local’ pizza, very tasty. By now the sun had come out and it was very warm, so changed again into something lighter. Walked along the lake front. The mountains looked totally different from earlier absolutely beautiful.

Tried to book a table at Redcliff Restaurant for the evening but they were fully booked. The reviews on trip advisor put it at no.1 so it was very popular. Need to book well in advance.

Te Anau is quite a small place but with lots of lodges around plus the visiting cars and campervans. We ate at the Indian restaurant - Radhas. Good service and food was good too. Nice mild evening and no rain. Really liked it here. Again we wished we had more than just the one night here especially as we have a long trip to Milford Sound tomorrow.
